Frugal Accomplishments

Five Frugal Things

Here are some of the ways I have been frugal this past week:

1. Renewed my Amazon Prime

Sometimes you have to spend a little to save a lot. I love Amazon Prime for so many reasons.  With Prime you get access to free Kindle books, music downloads, movies/TV shows, and the best is free 2-day shipping on most items.  I love to order Christmas and birthday gifts for family members who live all over the country using Amazon Prime because I can ship it to them for free.  **The postal service would charge me between $5-$10 to ship a package to Denver, but not Amazon.

We also love having access to an ever-changing variety of movies/TV shows. Since we decided to cut the cable cord over 9 years ago, this was a way cheaper option than any cable service!

2. Free kindling

We were visiting my parents’ house yesterday and saw tons of broken off twigs and small tree branches in their yard, so we decided to collect a huge box of kindling to use in the upcoming bitterly cold week.  I can’t even guesstimate how much money we save by using a wood stove as our primary heat source in the winter!  When you factor in scavenged wood the numbers get even better.

3. Bacon

My favorite brand of no-nitrate bacon was on sale at Kroger this week as part of the Buy 5, Save $5 special…so I stocked up!  I might go back and get some more before the deal runs out also.  I always get weird looks when I come up to the register with 10 packages of bacon:)

4. Froze leftover Christmas goodies

I have a really large family and it seems every year our dessert table gets bigger and bigger at Christmas.  My mom even has to throw some things out if no one takes leftover goodies home.  So I decided to suffer and take home the majority of the leftover desserts to freeze for later. ** Yes, we do eat mostly low carb but my husband has a cheat day on Saturdays so he loves to have lots of goodies in the freezer to choose from, which of course saves me money:)

5. Bought a winter coat for my son

I found a really nice, super thick coat at the thrift store for my son yesterday for just $3.99 and since he has been using a thin coat for most of the winter, I decided to scoop that up for him.  We are supposed to have bitterly cold temps for the next week and maybe some snow in the weeks ahead, so it was a lucky find.
